"The moment you go back to doing the things you used to do is the moment you fail"-John, during Sunday's Service
These remind me of the story of Peter. After Jesus' crucifixion, Peter was lost & ashamed for many days. During the last supper, Peter had promised to stay by his side no matter what (Mark 14:29). Peter then proceeded to deny even knowing Jesus. After a while, Peter returned to his old ways and started fishing again (he was a fisherman before he started following Jesus). One day, while Peter was fishing, Jesus appeared to him and the two sat on the shore and ate together. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?"(John 21:15) The fact that Jesus referred to Peter as "Simon" is significant. In John 1:42, Jesus changes Simon's name to Peter (which means "rock"). After Peter reverts back to his old way of life, Jesus refers to him as Simon because he lost sight of what he was to do.
If Jesus were to appear to you what would he call you? Carl or Carla, Daniel or Danielle? Do you act like the new creature you are, or do you revert back to your old ways? During tough times is when the need to stay the course is most necessary. Our true character is shown during adversity. If we can stay true to our beliefs during the tough times, we will make it through and see the glories God has in store for us. God will not put anything in front of us that we cannot handle. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
I want to finish with John 21:25: "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written." The world may not have enough room to hold the books, but wouldn't it be exciting to read them?
